Coordinating Drones Without GPS or Pilots Using the Vantiq Intelligence Platform
Most drones today are built with constraints. They rely on GPS, need trained pilots and follow fixed routes that can’t adapt on the fly. This makes them unsuitable for dynamic, high-risk environments—like disaster zones, tunnels, warehouses and complex infrastructure sites.
To break through those limitations, Vantiq completed a breakthrough proof-of-concept in Japan. In an indoor environment without GPS, a coordinated fleet of seven drones—including entry-level models—navigated autonomously using only real-time input from sensors, cameras and AI.
Seven drones. No GPS. Fully autonomous coordination.
In this test, Vantiq connected seven drones—some of which lacked GPS or advanced onboard computing—to its event-driven intelligence platform. The drones received live input from surveillance cameras and indoor sensors. Vantiq processed these data streams in real time and issued instructions instantly.
As the environment changed, so did the drones. They tracked human movement, avoided obstacles, and adapted their routes—all without pilots, preprogrammed missions, or latency delays. A human interface was available but never needed: the drones made every decision autonomously.
How real-time orchestration works
Vantiq connects sensors, systems, and GenAI into one event-driven brain. In this PoC, Vantiq’s orchestration engine used computer vision to detect real-world events—like motion—then translated them into coordinated drone commands.
Rather than relying on rigid scripts, the system responded to what was actually happening. When a person entered the room, drones followed. When a sensor triggered, flight paths changed. Each drone became a dynamic agent within a live, intelligent swarm.
Beyond the Sky: Built for more than drones
The same architecture that powers swarm control can be applied to ground robots, autonomous vehicles, smart factories, and connected buildings. Anywhere machines need to act on live data without human micromanagement, Vantiq delivers the missing layer of orchestration.
This proof-of-concept demonstrates the power of systems that sense, decide, and act as one. From emergency response to logistics to industrial automation, real-time intelligence is becoming the foundation of next-generation operations.
